Cleveland TN (02/26/00) The Cleveland Speedway
kicked
the Y2K season into gear with the 5th Annual Kart WinterNationals
Saturday. Drivers representing seven different states raced in
nine
different divisions for an excess of $7,500. 00 in posted
prize
monies. Winners Saturday included; Lonnie Dawson of Bessimer
AL,
Trevor Bayne of Knoxville TN (2 Wins), Chris Douglas of Florence
AL, Aaron Ridley of Chatsworth GA, Bradley Gerrells of Dahlonga
GA
(2 Wins), Jake Tyler of Savannah TN, and Shane Duncan of Dalton
GA.
The big money winner of the WinterNationals was Bradley Gerrells
who pocketed over $1400. 00 by winning one of the two "Dirt
Track Madness" (Stock Heavy) big money features and the
Limited Heavy feature. Chris Douglas won the other big money
"Dirt Track Madness" (Stock Medium) feature pocketing
in
excess of $1,000. 00 for his efforts.
In the first of nine feature events Shane
Duncan (#
77) of Dalton GA won the Amateur division 20 lap feature.
Fast
qualifier Ken Stephenson of Leoma TN dropped quickly from
top
contention leaving third starting Troy Webb only to challenge
Duncan. Webb held on to finish second with Chance Watson coming
from sixth to finish third. Rounding out the top five were; Austin
Patrick and pole-sitter Stephenson.
The thunderous Limited Heavy were up next
and Bradley
Gerrells of Dahlonga GA proved he was the man to
beat, winning from
the pole and holding second fastest qualifier
Adam Ingram to a firm
second place. Phillip Bell, Barrett Terry
and Chris Whitehead
rounded out the top five.
In the
Jr. Restricted feature Jake Tyler
of Savannah TN knocked off
pole-sitter Brent Sperin who lead
early in the 20 lap event. Aaron
Ridley, Trevor Holbert, Drew
Prater and Timmy Hartley rounded out
the top five.
The Stock Heavy was
the first of the two
big "Dirt Track Madness" events.
Brent Shelton of Decatur
AL set fast time over fifty-four other
karts in qualifying with
a lap of 17:299 seconds. As the race took
the green flag of thirty
starters it was second and fourth fastest
qualifiers Bradley
Gerrells and Chris Douglas breaking away to
battle for the lead.
Gerrells passed under the checkered flag less
than half a kart
length over Douglas. Shane Evans finished third,
Scott Tipton
finished fourth and Thomas Mathis finished
fifth.
In the Jr. Sportsman 2
division Trevor
Bayne of Knoxville TN took the win (his first of
two Saturday)
from his pole position start. Paul Lampkin Jr.,
Travis Travis,
Jordan Napier and Mark Anderson rounded out the top
five.
In the Jr. Unrestricted
"A" Main
feature event Aaron Ridley of Chatsworth GA came
from third place
to take the win. Brett Jones finished second, with
fast qualifier
Jake Tyler finishing third. Chip Brindle and Brett
Miller rounded
out the top five finishers.
The big money Stock Medium "Dirt Track
Madness" event was next up with Adam Ingram of Sweetwater
TN
out qualifying fifty-three other entrees with a lap time of
17:316
seconds. Again with Bradley Gerrells and Chris Douglas
flanking the
thirty kart field starting second and fourth. The
Gerrells/Douglas
combination quickly powered to the front only
this time it was
Douglas in the preverbal "Cat-Bird Seat".
Douglas was
able to prevent a Gerrells sweep of the Dirt Track
Madness races.
Gerrells finished second, third was Brent Shelton,
fast qualifier
Ingram was fourth with Andy Whitten rallying to
finish
fifth.
In the Jr. Sportsman 1
feature Travor Bayne
of Knoxville TN collected his second win.
Jordan hartley came
from fourth to finish second. Jordan Napier was
third with Paul
Lampkin Jr. and Jacob Smith finishing fourth and
fifth.
And in the last race of the
WinterNationals
event Lonnie Dawson of Bessimer AL vested a
twenty-six kart field
for the win. Second place finisher Donnie
Thurman passed by Dawson
in the races late stages, but couldn't
hold back the resurgent
Dawson. Jason Nix came from tenth to finish
third. Justin Lindsey
was fourth and Jeff Welborn finished
fifth.
