Rain
Forces Delay in Midst of Super Late Model Preview
In what was expected to be a small preview
of next weekends big Memorial Day Weekend Super Late Model race,
fans of the Cleveland Speedway were forced (by mother-nature)
to wait, due to continuing thundershowers. After two, hour plus
rain delays all looked well as the Hobby division completed their
feature. This set the stage for the Super Late Models. Unfortunately
as the field roared around to the green a light / steady shower
again forced a delay. The on again / off again showers persisted
until speedway officials had no choice but to cancel the remainder
of the races. With the "big" Southern All-Star Memorial
Day Weekend show scheduled for next Saturday night May 27th,
speedway officials have decided to pick up where they left off
in two weeks on Saturday night June 3rd. With the Hobby division
feature completed, they will have a night off of action (June
3rd).
The Hobby feature was action packed as Richard
Dixon (# 3) of Cleveland (fresh off his Mid Season Championship
win last weekend) battled hard to get by early race leader /
heat race winner Lynn McNeese. Following Dixon across the checkers
was David Rodgers, James Nichols, defending Hobby Champion Doyle
Herron, and Dirk Carter.
In the qualifying for the Super Late Model
division Shawn Chastain (# 15) of Murphy NC rolled off the quick
time of 14:545 to earn the BudLight Pole award. Chastain lead
to the checkers the first of three heat races, subsequently earning
himself the pole for the feature. Ricky Holland (# 42) of Ooltewah
TN (this years Shamrock 100 winner) earned the outside pole by
virtue of winning the second heat. David Millians (# 9) of Chickamagua
beat third fastest qualifier David Payne for the third and final
heat of the night. In the last chance consolation race Jason
McMahan (# 10) of Knoxville TN took the win.
