June 10, 2000-Cleveland (TN) Speedway
The Southern All-Stars returned to Cleveland
Speedway Saturday night to finish what they'd started two weeks
earlier, when rains postponed the "A" Main 50 lap feature
of the 23rd Annual "Johnson Coca Cola Tennessee Memorial
Race". Former series champion and current points leader
of the series Clint Smith (# 44) of Senoia Georgia lead from
flag to flag in front of a packed house to pocket the $3,000
first place prize in his "Turkey Creek Snacks" sponsored
Ford Mustang. "It's great to be in victory lane again",
stated Smith in a post race interview from victory lane. Patrick
Duggan made a late challenge on Smith with less than ten laps
remaining in the feature, but had to settle for second at the
checkers. Cleveland Speedway rookie competitor John Owenby again
flexed his muscle as a top contender by making a last lap pass
for third by outside pole sitter Kevin Gill. Rounding out the
top five finishers was current runner up in S.A.S. points Paul
Tims.
At the drop of the green Smith moved ahead of outside pole sitter
Kevin Gill, with Duggan right behind, but the start was cut short
as David Millians slowed down the back stretch and caused a major
pile up with 7 cars. All the cars, except Dewaye Smith were
able to restart the race after a lengthy caution period.
On the second restart Smith then pulled
ahead of Gill and Duggan jumped inside Gill and took over the
second spot with Gill falling into the third spot, Millians fourth
and John Ownbey fifth. Smith and Duggan then pulled ahead of
the rest of the field and the race was going to come down to
these two as they started to work into the lapped traffic when
Duggan caught Smith in the traffic and tried to make a moved
to the outside to take over the top spot, but as these two got
into the traffic Gill slipped up behind them and made a run at
both of them until the caution came out and allowed Smith and
Duggan to have a clean track ahead for the last half of the race.
Smith never bobbled as he lead the final half of the race comfortably
and Duggan made one challenge with about 10 laps remaining, but
never regained the momentum to take another shot at Smith as
he cruised on to get his first win of the season and pad his
points lead just a little over the second place car of Tims.
Patrick Duggan brought home the second
place money with John Ownbey slipping by Kevin Gill in turn three
and four on the final lap to take the third spot, Gill fell back
to fourth and Paul Tims came home in the fifth position.
Finishing in the sixth spot was Ricky Holland, seventh to John
Jones, eighth belonged to Carnell Parker, ninth Andy Dill and
tenth to Kent Hicks.
