Champions Andy
Dill & P.D. Doss Spring Clean Cleveland
Reigning Cleveland Speedway Track Champion Andy Dill of Georgetown
(TN) proved he was still as powerful as ever Saturday night by
taking the lead using the new outside groove around the recently
reconfigured Tennessee Valley dirt track. A full field of Claimer
Late Models entered the "Spring Fling 30" Championship
race and witnessed a surprising outcome as the checkers flew.
P.D. Doss was awarded the victory after apparent winner Nick
Yancy came up light at the scales. North Carolina racer Jim Twiggs
rallied over the Hobby division for his first win of the season.
Jimmy Brown also won his first race of 2001 in the Pony Stock
class, after Adam Roberts refused to sell his engine heads. The
12 lap "Anything Goes" Street class race went to former
division champion Donald Forgey.
In Budweiser: King of Speed Qualifying Time Trials David
Smith of Chattanooga set fast time in his red #22D "B &
B Mechanical, I Buy Homes" Chevrolet Monte Carlo clocking
a 14:477 lap around Cleveland Speedway. Shawn Chastain backed
up his win last weekend with a second fast qualifying effort.
In the first of two Super Late Model heat races Mike Tinker (a.k.a.
The Lawman) powered out front of Smith for the win. Lamar Scoggins
finished third with John Owenby and Brad Coffey rounding out
the top five. Chastain raced to the win from the pole with Dill
in hot pursuit. Chris Twiggs, Johnney Chastain and Tim Richardson
finished third thru fifth.
As the field took the green flag Tinker and Chastain battled
for supremacy with Tinker taking momentary control. Dill stepped
up to the high side as J. Chastain reared the first yellow flag
after hitting the wall in turn four. Dill peaked into the lead
shortly before lap 10 on the high groove swinging pass Chastain
and Tinker for the lead in turn three and four. Reigning Cleveland
Speedway Rookie of the Year, John Owenby continued his recent
streak of "bad" luck when the transmission let go down
the front straight-away while running sixth. Scoggins followed
in Dill's tracks using the high grove to gain passage on his
fellow competitors from fifth. Scoggins passed Smith for fourth
and conquered Chastain and Tinker on a restart with ten circuits
remaining. Dill racing his # 39 "Suttles Construction and
Trucking and Renegade Trucking" sponsored Chevrolet Monte
Carlo was able to hold off Scoggins challenges as the checkers
waved with Tinker, S. Chastain and Smith following across the
line.
The Claimer Late Model 2nd annual "Spring Fling 30"
Championship race saw plenty of action. P. D. Doss lead the first
of two heat races despite his left rear tire going flat. Mike
Krivonavic tried to race past Doss on the outside but could only
get to second. Nick Yancy, Elgin Gray and Jody Campbell rounded
out the top five. In the second heat Peanut Clinton took he top
spot with P.D. Doss` younger brother Bobby Doss second. Dirk
Carter debuted finishing third with David Gamble and Milton Dunn
finishing fourth and fifth. In the feature Nick Yancy could do
no wrong as he raced from fifth to the lead after early race
leader Clinton's motor broke. By lap 10 Yancy was in control
with P.D. Doss close on his spoiler. As the checkers flew over
the field Yancy seemed to take his second feature of the season.
Unfortunately he was deemed light at the scales and was subsequently
disqualified from the race. To the enthusiasm of the crowd very
ecstatic P.D. Doss emerged from his black and green "Doss
Motors, Cleveland RV" sponsored racecar in victory lane.
Krizonavic, Gray, B. Doss, and Jeff Paige finished second thru
fifth
