Paul Tims Cleveland
Homecoming Easter Victory
In his first visit back to his home track since mid-March Georgetown,
Tennessee racer Paul Tims recorded his first win of the 2001
season Easter weekend. Cleveland native P.D. Doss picked up where
he left off last weekend in the Claimer Late Model division victory
lane. "Murphy Mania" seems to be sweeping Cleveland
Speedway as Chris Stewart became the second Hobby winner of the
small North Carolina town in the past two weeks. The Elliott
family had the Pony Stock feature covered as Kenneth took the
checkered flag. And in the Street race evening finale Jason Seaton
took the win for the first time this season.
In front of many of his friends, family, fans and even Peter
Cottontail himself, Saturday night Paul Tims held off current
Cleveland Speedway points leader Shawn Chastain for the wire
to wire Super Late Model victory. The reigning Southern All-Star
(2000) Rookie of the Year clocked in his black # 84 "Cleveland
Construction & Millwright, Port City Racing South" Pontiac
Gran Prix at 14:518 seconds during "Budweiser: King of Speed"
qualifying to earn the pole position for the first of two heats.
David Smith earned the pole for the other heat race as second
fast clocking a 14:625 second lap. Rounding out the six-pack
of fast qualifiers were; Chastain, Kent Hicks, Randy Burrows
and Lamar Scoggins. In the first heat Tims and Chastain raced
away from the field with Burrows, rookie James Gamble and Tim
Richardson following. The second heat saw Hicks defeat pole sitter
David Smith with Scoggins, defending track champion Andy Dill
and Dewayne Smith following under the flag.
As the field took the green Tims powered to the lead bringing
with him Chastain and David Smith momentarily while Hicks gathered
things back up on the high side. Dill, Scoggins and Tinker began
their march to the front overpowering Smith and Burrows before
settling into their own battle for position. Dill held his recent
mastery of the high side until a lap 17 stall by Nick Yancy forced
a restart. Tims never missed a beat as the remaining 13 circuits
sped by with Chastain and Hicks following. Dill and Tinker ensued
their wheel to wheel battle as Scoggins fell outta contention
as the flags flew. Tinker squeaked out fourth place over Dill
at the flagstand.
