Scoggins/Smith/Perry
Dance Through Cleveland Thriller
Racefans will be talkin` about Saturday nights three-way
dance at Cleveland Speedway for a long time as they witnessed
Lamar Scoggins, David Smith and Jamie Perry battling for supremacy
in round #6 of the championship season. By less than a few inches
Scoggins racing his "Candy Apple Auto Sales, Cleveland Auto
Outlet, Chambers Equipment Sales, Scherl Enterprises" sponsored
Pontiac Gran Prix of Georgetown TN took his second victory of
the season in what is to be considered one of the tracks best
races ever. In the Claimer Late Model division "Peanut"
Clinton of Rossville GA was deemed the winner after Bobby Doss
came up light at the scales. The "North Carolina Connection"
still ran ramped as Jim Twiggs of Murphy took his second win
of 2001 in the Hobby feature. In the Pony Stock it was an all
Elliott show as Kenneth and Chad both of Cleveland finished first
and second respectfully in the feature. In the Street finale
it was Cleveland's Herbert Chambers flexing his muscle on the
white flag lap to take the lead and the win.
In Budweiser: King of Speed Qualifying, Jamie Perry returned
(with Spec Motor under the hood) to set the pace turning a 14:725
second lap. In the first of two Super Late Model heat races it
was third fastest qualifier Randy Burrows taking the lead. Perry
would battle back using his patented bottom groove as the flag
waved over the field. Perry and Burrows collided together at
the flagstand (with checkers high in the air) to set the inside
row for the feature. Second fast qualifier Lamar Scoggins (14:832)
pounded the competition for the win in the second heat over Kent
Hicks. As the field took the green flag to start the 30 Lap "A"
Main race Scoggins took command on top with Perry following closely
on the bottom. Burrows night ended before it began as he stalled
in front of the pack in turn two of the opening laps. David Smith
began working the (outside) concrete wall trying to find passage
on Hicks and Jake Lowry. Brad Coffey reared a yellow simultaneously
with Carson Burris. Scoggins and Perry continued their duel as
David Smith continued usage of the very top of the track. Dewayne
Smith, Lowry and Hicks battled for fourth as David Smith began
pressuring Perry for second. Scoggins changed to the bottom of
the track as Perry rallied closer and closer with each passing
lap. Just passed the halfway point David Smith worked by Perry
to set-up a dance that would take to the checkers. Scoggins moved
back to the high groove as David Smith's pressure became intently
apparent. Perry got back into the picture as the trio raced three
wide in turn four. David Smith dropped to the bottom in attempt
to get by the "SuperWide" Scoggins as the laps waned.
Scoggins and David Smith exited turn four to the checkers almost
side by side with Scoggins taking the win at the line by merely
inches. Perry was third with Kent Hicks and Dewayne Smith rounding
out the top five.
