Double Trouble for Jamie
Perry & MidSeason Champion Glen Seaton III at Cleveland Races
The Super Late Models and the Claimer Late Models highlighted
this weekend's races Saturday night at the Cleveland Speedway.
Jamie Perry (a.k.a. The Ringgold Kid) took his second SLM win
of the season in round #10 of the 2001 championship season. Perry's
red #P4 "Sims Carpet Care, Cedar Hill Poultry Farm, Port
City Racing South" sponsored Chevrolet Monte Carlo picking
up the Spec-Motor $200 bonus using his "Race Engine Design"
engine. In the special Claimer Late Model division "Mid-Season
Championship" race, last years Novice Award winner Glen
Seaton III of Cleveland took his biggest win ever after taking
the checkers at the end of the 30 lap $500 to win "A"
Main feature. In the Hobby division Jon Woodward of Ooltewah
took his first win at the Cleveland Speedway. The Pony Stock
winner was Josh Doss of Cleveland who barely edged out last weekends
winner at the checkers. In the Street feature evening finale
it was former division champion Donald Forgey taking the win.
First up in Budweiser: King of Speed Qualifying, Jamie Perry
set the standard clocking a 14:421 second lap. In the first of
two Super Late Model heat races, Perry again reigned supreme
winning the preliminary and earning the "A" Main feature
starting pole position. Current points leader David Smith backed
up his second fastest qualifying lap also by winning his heat.
As the field took he green flag in the first of two "Double
Trouble 30 Features" Perry took command leaving Smith to
battle second with last weekends winner Kent Hicks, 15 year old
Todd Morrow, and Lamar Scoggins. Disaster was averted on the
font straight away by Paul Tims as he, Andy Dill and Chris Beavers
raced three wide off of four. Tims fell from contention, parking
his mount only two laps into the feature. A couple of minor cautions
slowed the field just past the halfway point until Dill and Randy
Burrows collided down the backstretch. David Smith continued
to apply pressure to Perry in search of his first win of the
season, unfortunately it would be as Smith mount broke while
attempting to pass Perry for the lead while the white flag waved.
With Smith stalled in turn four Perry took the checkers with
Hicks in a distant second, Morrow third, Scoggins fourth, and
Burrows in fifth.
The second half "DT-30 Races" the Claimer Late Model
Mid-Season Championship race it was Glen Seaton III and Shane
Breeden earning the front row starting spots after winning their
heat races. As the green flag flew for the special event Seaton
raced into the lead. As the field raced through the first lap
Dana Burrows got crossed back in the pack and collided with former
Mid Season Champion Peanut Clinton in turn two. Clinton careened
up off the outside concrete was and flipped up onto the speedway's
advertising billboards, making for a spectacular crash, of which
Clinton was uninjured. As the field took the restart Seaton led
with Breeden and second in points Chris Powell battling for second.
Current points leader P.D. Doss got into the wall while racing
towards the front on lap nine. Seaton almost lost the lead around
the halfway point as back-marker traffic allowed Powell to catch
up. Mark Cross worked into the top five on lap 20 passing Elgin
Gray. Cross and Gray were able to work pass Mike Krizonavic in
the waning stages of the event to secure top five positions as
the checkers waved over Seaton, Powell and Breeden. From victory
lane Seaton thanked his dad, family and crew for their support
in racing the #92 "Kustom Exhaust Muffler and Brake, MRC,
Cleveland Collision Center" sponsored racecar.
