Kent Hicks on a Roll at Cleveland w/ Third Win

In what is shaping up to be a great track championship points battle for the Cleveland Speedway title Cleveland native Kent Hicks held at bay his fellow competitors Saturday night for his third Super Late Model win of the season. The red, white and blue "Rocket Chassis, Hicks Specialty Welding" sponsored Pontiac Gran Prix racecar, made a complete sweep of events during Round #11 of the 2001 season, taking Budweiser: King of Speed qualifying, the 1st heat race as well a all 30 laps of the "A" Main feature race. Hicks lap of 14:635 set the standard with Andy Dill getting closest turning a 14:728 pass. Hicks defeated fellow Rocket-Racer, 15 year old Todd Morrow in the first of two heats. Dill won heat #2 over current points leader David Smith to set the "A" Main feature starting grid. Hicks quickly opened up a good lead over Dill, Morrow land Da. Smith leaving the rest to battle for fifth. The races only caution flew as leading rookie of he year contender Carroll Cate spun his racecar on lap five. Dewayne Smith raced hard with Eddie Benefield, Randy Burrows and Mike Tinker before capturing fifth at the checkers. Hicks has been on a steady run, winning two of the last three races at Cleveland and finishing second in the one he didn't win, as he chases towards the current track championship points leader.

The top two in points for the Claimer Late Model division put on a show in the 20 lap feature. P.D. Doss of Cleveland raced pass his little brother Bobby then held off points leader Chris Powell for his fourth win of the season. Little brother Bobby (Doss) finished third with pole sitter Mike Krizonavic fourth and last weekends Mid-Season Championship winner Glen Seaton III in fifth. The eldest of the family Glen Seaton Jr. of Cleveland won his first race of the season in the Hobby division. Reigning division champion Richard Dixon took second with Lynn Roark, Lee Hogan and Kenny Scroggins rounding out the top five. Another reigning division champion took the Pony Stock win. Justin Winters of Benton topped the feature event over Jason Spraker, Jimmy Brown, David Doss, and Scott Ledford. And in the evenings Street division finale Donald Forgey of Cleveland raced (in an unfamiliar black #10) to another win of the 2001 season. The last race was definitely one of the nights best as reigning division champion Anthony Hawkins finished along side of the winner just inches behind. Roy Nichols, Herbert Chambers, and Jim Erwin rounded out the top five. Next Saturday night the Pony Stock division race their Mid-Season Championship double points feature event along with Round #12 for all the other four divisions of the 2001 racing season.
