One of the most powerful forces at Cleveland Speedway week in and week out made his second trip to victory lane Saturday night in the 30 lap Super Late Model "A" Main event. Dewayne Smith piloted his yellow and black (# 21) "Tri-State Appraisals, Coe's Towing, Car City, Employer Connection, Swift Enterprises" sponsored Chevrolet Monte Carlo sweeping the events leading up to the feature race. Smith clocked an early 14:602 second lap around the Tennessee Valley area dirt track. Smith's closest adversary in "Budweiser: King of Speed" qualifying was Kent Hicks with a 14:697 pass. Randy Burrows, Lamar Scoggins, and rookie (16 year old) Todd Morrow rounded out the top five qualifiers. Heat one went with no trouble to Smith from his pole position as Randy Burrows held on for second. David Smith, Morrow and (a SLM debuting) P.D. Doss rounded out the top five. The second heat witnessed a troubled start as both Hicks and Scoggins were penalized for a bad starting attempt. This moved sixth fastest qualifier 2000 Rookie of the Year John Owenby to pole along with eighth fastest Tim Richardson. Owenby found the front to his liking as Scoggins (Owenby's uncle) raced along the outside in a passing attempt. Reigning track champion Andy Dill raced towards third under Hicks and eventually past Scoggins for second. Owenby earned the outside pole by winning the heat, with Dill, Scoggins, Hicks, and Richardson following. As the field roared to the green flag of the feature race, Smith inserted command with Burrows, Owenby, Dill and Scoggins in tow. Caution appeared on lap 7 as Tim Richardson stalled out of turn two. On the restart Scoggins working the high side scraped the outside concrete at the flagstand on lap 9, which would lead to his ending his night prematurely. The best race of the night worked from third as David Smith hounded Owenby. Burrows struggled in second but Owenby couldn't capitalize for Da. Smith and Dill's efforts in fourth and fifth. De. Smith took the checkers upping his stats to two wins, six top five's and a remarkable five fast qualifier nods.
