Results Mike Tinker Wins Battle
of # 22's / Andy Dill Wins Championship War Seventeen Super Late Models signed in for the races with Dewayne Smith again setting the standard clocking a 14:806 lap around the Tennessee Valley dirt track. Jamie Perry clocked second quick and it wouldn't be until the feature that the two fastest would go at it tooth and nail. Following Smith across the line in the first heat was Mike Tinker and Andy Dill, with Dill gaining a very important five bonus points towards Randy Burrows, who'd finished fifth just behind rookie Todd Morrow. This set up a fantastic championship scenario for Dill and Burrows in the fact that of the two, whomever finished in front of the other was to be the 2001 Track Champion. The second heat race which Perry proved dominant saw David Smith race to second with Tim Richardson third, John Owenby fourth and fellow rookie to Morrow, James Gamble finishing fifth. The start of the race was the major turning point of the "battle" as Smith and Perry locked horns going into turn one. Tinker and Da. Smith both skated by on the inside of the duo and shot past going down the back straight away. As the field completed lap one Smith and Perry again tangled in turn one rearing the first caution. As the field took the restart it was Tinker, Da. Smith, Perry, Morrow and Dill. Burrows worked feverishly to gain positions towards Dill as the laps clicked off with Da. Smith pressuring Tinker lap after lap. Perry came towards the lead pair of # 22's at the end of the 30 lap feature but it was Tinker winning the battle earn his second win of the season in his "Tinkers Garage, Hair Taimers Salon, Port City Racing South" Chevrolet Monte Carlo racecar. Rookie Morrow driving his "Shannon Trucking, Cleveland Speedway Racing School, Rocket Chassis" was able to fend off Dill for fourth and with Gamble finishing more than three position behind Morrow earns the 2001 Rookie of the Year title. Dill on the other hand finishing three positions ahead of Burrows was enough to clinch his second consecutive Cleveland Speedway Track Championship title slinging his "Suttles Construction & Trucking, Fine Homes, Port City Racing South" mount with victorious celebratory donuts on the front straight away in front of the fans after the race.
