Lamar Scoggins Wins
Cleveland Championship Opener
Despite the threatening advances from Mothernature, racefans
were treated to a full night of action pack dirt races for the
first time in three weeks as the Cleveland Speedway hosted it's
first points race of the 2002 season. The hometown local's did
a good job in all classes, as each division seen the checkers
fall for Cleveland-er racers. Atop the five division card was
the Super Late Model class and it was Lamar Scoggins taking the
checkers for the 30 lap "A" Main. In the Claimer Late
Model division a time shortened feature was won by Glen Seaton
III. In the Hobby division it was defending division champ Doug
Works putting his new ride in victory lane, with Jason Spraker
winning the Pony Stock race and Roy Nichols taking the final checkers
of the night in the Street division.
In Budweiser "King of Speed" Qualifying Scoggins
bested the twenty two car field pacing his " Fine Homes,
Orr Construction" Rocket Pontiac Gran Prix with a 14:467
lap around the TN Valley dirt oval. Scoggins would be staged in
the first of two heats
against reigning Cleveland Speedway Rookie of the Year 16 year
old Todd Morrow the third fastest overall qualifier. Scoggins
had little problem in the heat, earning the pole for the "A"
Main feature. Morrow held off challenges from Shawn Chastain for
the runner up position. Outsider Derrick Rainey of Atlanta finished
fourth in the heat with Bobby Mayse in fifth. Second fastest qualifier
James Gamble (14:666) staged against fourth fastest qualifier
former track champion (1994) Rick Hixson. The two drag-raced side
by side for two laps before Hixson got the early advantage. Then
Paul Tims set sail passing both Gamble and Hixson for the lead
and the heat win. Hixson salvaged second just in front of ultra-fast
"Little John" Owenby. Gamble and 2002 rookie title contender
P.D. Doss rounded out the top five.
As the field took the initial green flag, Doss got crossed
up on the first circuit collecting fellow rookies Tim Meadows,
Elgin Gray and veteran Mike Tinker. On the next start Scoggins
again set sail with Tims, Morrow, Hixson and Chastain following.
By lap three Chastain got by Hixson and starting reeling in Morrow.
With Scoggins comfortably in command Morrow continued his pressure
upon Tims. Mayse got into Owenby to rear the second cau tion
period of the race. Rainey, Johnney Chastain and Gray also got
caught up in the turn two incident. Dewayne Smith and J. Chastain
would rear separate solo incidents before the halfway point of
the race. The second half of the 30 lap feature went off without
problems as Scoggins powered his way towards the black and white
rags. Morrow was credited with second after Tims was deemed light
at the scaled and disqualified. Owenby motored by S. Chastain
and coraled a third place finish to his uncles win. Hixson finished
out the top five positions. Rainey, Tinker, Eddie Benefield, Dewayne
Smith, and Gamble rounded out the top ten.
