The Super Late Models put on, by far, the best race of the season Saturday night at Cleveland Speedway as Dewayne Smith sashayed to the head of a 3-way dance to win his first race of the 2002 season. In the Claimer Late Model division Chad Anderson took a late race lead to win the "A" Main feature. In the Hobby division it was Kenny Scoggins taking the checkers. In the Pony Stock feature Scott Ledford inherited his first win after a refusal of a post race inspection by the apparent winner. And in the Street class Roy Nichols went three in a row with the final checkers of the night. A super fast track greeted the competitors for the Super Late Model; Budweiser "King of Speed" Qualifying Time Trials. Smith clocked his "Car City, Bradley Asphalt, Swift Enterprises" GRT Chevrolet Monte Carlo at a lap of 14:355 seconds knocking off Todd Morrow from the fast-time seed. Smith would be set against last weeks SLM winner Mike Tinker the third fastest overall qualifier for the first of two heat races. Smith held off Tinker collecting his first pole for the "A" Main feature in the process. Tinker, and Chuck Tinker wound up second and third with P.D. Doss & Eddie Benefield rounding out the top five. Morrow and Lamar Scoggins staged against one another for the second heat race. Scoggins took the lead as Morrow slipped back to second just in front of Tims. Scoggins held off Morrow as last weeks fast qualifier Bobby Mayse raced into the top five in front of James Gamble. As the field drag raced off of four, for the green of the 30 lap "A" Main Feature, Scoggins stepped up to the high side and showed there was plenty of dancing room as Smith dug towards the bottom of the track floor. The duo diced post to post, wheel to wheel for just over the first half of the feature. Scoggins lead laps 1, 4, 5, while Smith took shots of the top spot under the flag stand on laps 2, 3, 6 and 7. Scoggins held a slew of laps between 8 and 14 until Smith got back under on lap 15. One lap later caution appeared to give the dancers a break, thus allowing Tinker to cut-in. Scoggins didn't go away without a fight, minus breather and made the makings of the 3-way battle spectacular. Benefield got crossed up on lap 17 in turn two with Nathan Parris duplicating the effort two laps later slowing the show. On the next restart Tinker got by Scoggins as the reigning points leader faded from the dance with mechanical problems and one SLM piloted by Tims steadily pressuring in what was to be the final song (battle) of the race. Tinker attempts to reel in Smith just ran outta laps, as the checkers waved and the yellow and black attack team cheered their driver for the first time into victory lane. Tinker, Scoggins, Tims and Morrow collected second thru fifth. Mayse, Doss, C. Tinker, Chris Powell and Benefield rounded out the top ten.
