TN Valley's Finest Lawman Mike Tinker & Fireman Shawn Reese Share Cleveland Victories

Sharing top billing with the Super Late Models, the Hobby MidSeason Championship lived up to expectation, as a full field of top racers from around the TN Valley area competed Saturday night at Cleveland Speedway. A pair of the areas "finest" worked to win their respective "A" Main feature races. First off in the SLM division "The Lawman" Mike Tinker (yep he's one) took command for the last half of the feature after passing, race leader Dewayne Smith, on the outside to win his second race of the 2002 season. Second off the Hobby MSCh event went the entire 30 laps with "Fireman" (he's one too) Shawn Reese burning up the field in route to his second victory of the season. Doug Works and current Hobby points leader Richard Dixon finished a strong second and third respectfully. In other racing action the Claimer Late Model division was ended by a huge wreck when Stephanie Yancy got airborne (she was uninjured) on the front straight away. Bobby Doss was the winner in a red/checkered flag finish. Donald Forgey made his Pony Stock transition final, as the former Street Division Champion took his career first feature (Pony Stock) win. Roy Nichols continued despite in what looked like a new ride taking the final checkers of the night again in the Street division race, that's four outta five wins this season.

As the Super Late Models took to the track for Budweiser "King of Speed" Qualifying Time Trials Dewayne Smith picked up from where he left off two weeks prior, setting fast time of the field in his "Car City, Bradley Asphalt, Swift Enterprises" GRT Chevrolet Monte Carlo. A rookie mistake cost P.D. Doss what would've been third fastest time when he failed to cross the scales after his 14:772 lap of qualifying. Smiths' time of 14:555 would be challenged only by Todd Morrow as the youngster came closest with a 14:652 as one of the final qualifiers of the twenty car field. Smith won heat #1 regulating him to the pole for the feature event. Third fastest overall qualifier John Owenby finished second to Smith with, Eddie Benefield, James Gamble and rookie contender Elgin Gray rounding out the top five. In the second heat trouble struck Morrow while leading as his mount stalled in turn two. Fourth fastest Tinker raced by and to the eventual win with Scoggins, Paul Tims, Bobby Mayse and Doss following.

As the field took the initial green flag, it seemed Smith would be the first SLM-er to grace victory lane for the second time this year, as he pulled away from Tinker, Scoggins and Owenby. Lap five reared the first yellow and continued the bad luck for both Doss and Morrow as the two spun while going for the same "piece of real estate". On the restart lap six reared another yellow as Richard Harvey bounced off Mid Durham in turn four. Tinker kept a surmountable amount of pressure onto Smiths' spoiler until enough momentum carried the # T22 "Hair Tamers Port City Racing South, Tinkers Garage" GRT Chevrolet Monte Carlo racecar by on the outside of turn four. Scoggins followed suit as Smith began reeling backwards eventually succumbing to the end of his top notch attempt at back to back victories. On the restart Scoggins stepped up to take a shot at "breaking the law" on Tinker and was even shown as leading a few side by side laps. As the 30th circuit approached it was Ringgold GA racer Tinker up high in firm control matching his number of victories last season in only the fifth race of the year. Benefield and Tims capitalized on a last turn miscue by third running Owenby to finish third and fourth respectfully. Mayse, Chris Beavers, Morrow, Gamble and Doss rounded out the top ten finishers
