Ford's Morrow and
Hixson Top Cleveland SLM's
Nichols Edges Nash in Street MSCh
Another strong field of competitors were at the Cleveland Speedway
for the Street division Mid Season Championship event. In a repeat
of last weekends 30 lap Super Late Model feature Todd Morrow of
Old Fort TN passed (again on the outside) a different, former
Cleveland Speedway Track Champion (Rick Hixson 1994) for his fourth
season victory in his "Shannon Trucking, Cleveland Speedway
Driving School" Ford Mustang. In the Street MidSeason Championship
race points leader Roy Nichols of Cleveland barely edged young
Alex Nash in the 20 lap "Any Thing Goes Rumble". The
Claimer Late Model division saw the triumphant return of Novice
award competitor Justin Winters of Benton TN. The Pony Stock division
is Jason Spraker dominated and that fact again didn't change as
he extended his points lead with another win. And in the Hobby
feature Jerry Coffman of Soddy Daisy TN took another win, this
one coming in his second different ride of the 2002 season.
In Budweiser: King of Speed Qualifying Time Trials 23 racers signed
in for battle with Hixson of Soddy Daisy TN topping Morrow's early
fast lap with a 14:165 time. Third fast qualifier Dewayne Smith
lined up against Hixsons' Ford Taurus for the first of two heats.
Hixson blasted into the lead a won the heat over Smith, Bobby
Mayse, John Owenby and Paul Tims. Morrow took command, with his
Mustang, of the second heat from the pole over fourth fastest
qualifier Chuck Tinker. Brad Allen finished third behind Tinker
with Kevin Gibson and Chris Beavers rounding out the top five.
As the field took the green Hixson took command and seemed to
be the one to halt Morrow recent streak. The race was marred by
cautions for the first handful of circuits. Beavers and Gibson
tangled down the front straight away battling for tenth. The yellow
ended Beavers night drawing him to last place being the first
car out. Morrow kept applying pressure, on the restarts as the
scattered yellows flags flew overhead. Rookies Elgin Gray and
P.D. Doss corralled Eddie Benefield for a lap 2 caution in turn
three. Doss was able to salvage a top ten despite the incident.
A pair of debut's ended early as the field got going towards the
races halfway point. Eric Wilson making his SLM debut ended with
a crash on the front straight away and Jake Lowry ended his top
ten run with mechanical problems on lap sixteen. Morrow like last
weekend began inching Hixson on the outside. Fans were also busy
watching Lamar Scoggins work from his fifteenth starting position
the outside passing car after car. It took plenty of patients
but Morrow finally worked past Hixson on lap 23 just after Scoggins
settled into fifth in front of Tinker. Smith watched the lead
duo hanging in the wings for a mistake that didn't happen and
would finish third with Bobby Mayse in fourth. Tinker, Tims, Ricky
Holland, Brian Burke and Doss rounded out the top ten.
In the 20 lap Street MidSeason Championship feature Jeff King
started on the pole after winning the Street heat. A three car
pile-up in the opening laps of the feature jumbled the field as
Raymond Lowery and Terry Graham all but blocked up the track in
turn four. It was up to the rest of the field to overcome the
obstacles in the caution free race and current points leader Roy
Nichols did just that opening up an early straight away lead in
his # 00 "Otto, Jimmy's Auto Repair" machine. Youngster
Alex Nash plotted his course from seventh, avoided contact a came
up about one lap shy of overtaking Nichols. Outside pole sitter
Chad Holcomb held off front-man Jeff King for third with Jason
Seaton finishing where he started in fifth. Chris Higgins, Herbert
Chambers, Jimmy Shields, Daniel Hollifield, and
