As the points season winds down for 2002, competitors are getting hungry for the "W" in the win column Saturday nights at the Cleveland Speedway. In only his second race this season BIG Jake Lowry of Georgetown returned, true to form, atop his game, as winner of the Super Late Model 30 lap feature. In the evenings special event, "the Pony Express Shootout" Jimmy Brown of Chattanooga led all 25 circuits of the feature. In other racing action, "The Worksmeister" Doug Works of Cleveland won the Hobby feature, Justin Winters of Benton secured the 2002 Novice Award in the Claimer Late Model division with his third win of the season and Roy Nichols of Cleveland again reigned supreme over the Street class. The night seemed threaten a bit by Mothernature as rains were scattered in the area but that didn't seem to affect the competitors as 23 SLM's signed in for Budweiser: King of Speed Qualifying Time Trials. Jamie Perry of Ringgold put his #P4 SLM to the dirt the quickest overall turning a 14:198 second lap. Mike Tinker, Paul Tims, Lowry and rookie Billy Mayo rounded out the top five in qualifying. In the first of two heats Perry took the checkers over Tims with Mayo finishing third. Brad Allen and Eddie Benefield rounded out the top five. Heat #2 was a tad more exciting as Lowry pulled into the lead from his outside front row starting spot. Tinker was able to keep pace but couldn't get by Jake's "Roberts & Sons Machine Shop, Hicks Specialty Welding, Lowry Drywall" white # 44 Chevrolet Monte Carlo. As the field came to the checkers Tinker, Bobby Mayse and current points leader Todd Morrow battling for positions, began to spin in turn four. Tinker and Mayse were able to correct the slide and get to the finishline. Kevin Gill and Dewayne Smith raced by the spun points leader to round out the top five. As the field took the green flag Perry and Lowry drag raced towards the first turn. Lowry, Perry & Tims fronted the field as Tinker, Mayse and Mayo headed group two a car length or so back. Brad Allen spun off of turn two collecting Morrow and newcomer Gary Hill on lap three. The damage was severe enough to knock Allen outta the race dropping him to last place on the night. Battling for fifth as well as "Rookie of the Year" honors, Billy Mayo spun on lap nine regulating him to the rear. For the next fifteen circuits Lowry and Perry diced in and out of lapped traffic, until M. Tinker reared the yellow from his fourth place position when he stalled in turn two. Chris Beavers stepped up on the restart and got by Benefield on the outside which turned out to be a smooth move to get into the top five. As the leaders took the white flag something let go on Bobby Mayse's machine as the fourth place competitor strew fluid into turn one and spun in front of the field. Evasive action was taken by the field and Beavers rallied to fourth with Benefield fifth. Smith, Chuck Tinker, Morrow, Peanut Clinton and leading rookie contender P.D. Doss rounded out the top ten. In the "Pony Express Shootout" Scott Ledford of Cleveland
and Jimmy Brown of Chattanooga headed up the front row of the
25 lap feature. A couple of quick cautions slowed the field for
the first two circuits as Brown got the lead with his "Parkway
Wholesale Tire, Roberts & Sons Machine Shop, Chat-town Radiator"
