Terry Gray Repeats
Cleveland U.S.C.S. Outlaw Sprint Win
The United Sprint Car Series made it's annual stop to the
Cleveland (TN) Speedway Saturday night for the 2nd installment
of the Tennessee State Championship: Outlaw Invasion races. Fans
were treated to an exciting "Romp N' Stomp" by the
winged warlords headed up this year once again by Terry Gray
of Bartlett TN. Gray produced another clean sweep of the events
winning the Dash Race, the 10 lap Heat Race and the 30 lap feature
in his # 10 "Wendy's, Goodson Farms" J&J / Westmar
sprint car.
First up on the evening was the Top 6 Dash race for the U.S.C.S.
sprinters. Chris Rogers of Douglasville GA rocketed into the
lead in his # 7 "Gain Detergent, William Bros. Lumber Co."
Clincher / Gaerte as Gray struggled for a lap before lighting
up a heater through the turns to get to second. Gray passed by
Winder GA's Doug Day's # 2D "Gotta Race - Arizona Sport
Shirts, ProShocks" Eagle / Dingler sprinter on the next
turn setting his sights on Rogers' green machine. Rogers soon
felt Gray's furry and the # 10 was out in front of the field.
Rogers and Day followed across the checkers. In the first of
two heats Gray continued his dominance leading all the way in
the heat from his front row starting spot. Marshall Skinner of
W. Memphis AR kept his blue # 26 "A&B Equipment, CBL
Corporation" Pro-Lite / Slo-Built sprint in second just
in front of Rogers. Rounding out the top five were; Scott Cramer
of Arcadia OH and Aubrey Black of (nearby) Lookout Mtn. GA. In
heat # 2 Jeremy Scott of Franklin GA took command in his # 76
"Signs Now, The Vortex Bar & Grill" Pro-Lite /
Fayette Auto Machine Shop sprint car. Coming to the front quickly
from his 6th starting spot was Jeff Swindell. The Bartlett TN
racer moved to second before losing control of his #6s "Goodson
Farms, Coca-Cola" Maxim / Gaerte ride in turn four. Day
inherited the # 2 position from Swindell and was able to hold
out at the checkers. Swindell was able to click back to third
within the six lap that remained after his spin. Rounding out
the top five were; Randy Weaver of Powder Springs GA and Dave
Thorman of Greenville SC.
Fireworks symbolized the start of the 30 lap feature as the
U.S.C.S. sprint car saluted the fans with the famous four-wide
pace lap. A lap or two later Gray and Day started the "A"
Main with a drag-race down the front straight-away. Gray got
the whole-shot and never looked back as Day, Skinner and Rogers
hammered out the second thru fourth. Magnito problems side-lined
Jeff Swindell as the first handful of laps clicked off. The race
was green until Shaun Stafford spun his ride in turn four of
lap 19. Gray restarted as only the top six remained in the lead
lap. Unfortunately one of those six, Cramer ended his top five
run while under caution with mechanical problems. Gray headed
back towards back-marker traffic as laps clicked towards the
end 30 mark. Skinner and Rogers put on a good run to second reversing
their finishing order from last years race. Gray took the checkers
in heavy lapped traffic with Skinner, Rogers, Day and Weaver
rounding out the top five. "My car has really been awesome
here, both times." stated Gray in a post race interview.
"This track is great! You can put a car anywhere on the
track and stay in it." Gray concluded by thanking his family
and crew (headed by Outlaw Sprint Car Pilot / friend Jason Sides).
Rounding out the top ten finishers were Randy Helton, Jeremy
Scott, Doug Fitzwater, Randy Scott, and Stafford.
